# Install and update

> Install agentx with Homebrew or the install script, try nightly builds and keep agentx up to date.

agentx runs on macOS and Linux, on Intel and ARM. It also needs `git` 2.40 or later on your `PATH`.

## Install

Install with [Homebrew](https://brew.sh):

```sh theme={null}
brew install grundmanise/tap/agentx
```

Homebrew builds agentx from source, so the first install takes about a minute.

Or install the latest release with the install script:

```sh theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://agentx.wtf/install | sh
```

The script downloads the release for your system from [GitHub](https://github.com/grundmanise/agentx/releases), checks it against the release's checksums and installs it to `~/.local/bin`. It never asks for `sudo`. If `~/.local/bin` is not on your `PATH`, the script says how to add it.

To read the script before you run it, download it first:

```sh theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://agentx.wtf/install -o install.sh
less install.sh
sh install.sh
```

The script takes these options, after `sh -s --` when you pipe it:

| Option | Effect |
| - | - |
| `--version 0.2.0` | Install that version instead of the latest. |
| `--nightly` | Install the newest nightly build. |
| `--dir DIR` | Install to `DIR` instead of `~/.local/bin`. `AGENTX_INSTALL_DIR` sets the same. |

Then run [`agentx doctor`](/cli/doctor) to check that this machine is ready.

## Update

Update the way you installed:

* **Homebrew**: run `brew upgrade agentx`.
* **Install script**: run the install command again, with the options you used the first time. It replaces the binary in place. A running [`agentx serve`](/cli/serve) keeps the old version until it restarts.

Run [`agentx version`](/cli/version) to see which version you have.

## Try a nightly build

Every night, agentx builds the latest code as a nightly, such as `0.3.0-nightly.20261001`, when it has changed. Nightlies get fixes and features first, and they have not had the testing a release has.

Install the newest nightly:

```sh theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://agentx.wtf/install | sh -s -- --nightly
```

Run the same command to move to a newer nightly. To go back to the latest release, run the install command without `--nightly`.

With Homebrew, `brew install --HEAD grundmanise/tap/agentx` builds the latest code instead of the latest release.

## Build from source

Build with Go 1.27 or later:

```sh theme={null}
git clone https://github.com/grundmanise/agentx.git
cd agentx/apps/cli && go build -o agentx .
```

On macOS, keep `cgo` enabled, the default, so [`agentx serve`](/cli/serve) watches through `FSEvents`.

## Uninstall

* **Homebrew**: run `brew uninstall agentx`.
* **Install script**: delete `~/.local/bin/agentx`, or the file in the directory you installed to.

Uninstalling leaves agentx home, `~/.agentx`, and your skills in place.
