Run agentx update to replace the agentx you run with the latest release:
The command downloads the release for your system from GitHub, checks it against the release’s checksums, and replaces the agentx file in place. It needs no sudo when you installed without it. It changes nothing else: your settings, your skills and the account repo stay as they are. If you already run the latest release, the command says so and changes nothing:
A running agentx serve keeps the old version until it restarts. Restart it, or the desktop app, to run the new version.

Check without installing

Add --check to find out whether a newer version is out:
The check changes nothing, so a script or a shell prompt can run it to show a notice. With --json, the update event says what it found.

Nightly builds

A nightly build updates to the newest nightly, and a release updates to the latest release. To move from one to the other, pass a flag: You can pass only one of them. --check works with each. Listing the nightly builds counts against GitHub’s limit of 60 requests an hour for anonymous requests. If GitHub refuses, set GITHUB_TOKEN to a personal access token and run the command again. Finding the latest release and downloading it need no token.

When it refuses

agentx update replaces only an agentx it may replace. It refuses, and names the fix, when:
  • Homebrew installed agentx. Run brew upgrade agentx instead.
  • The agentx is the one inside the desktop app. The app ships with its own agentx, which a new release of the app replaces. Download the newer app from the releases.
  • You built agentx from source. Its version is dev, and no release stands in for it. Build it again, or install a release with the install script.
  • The file cannot be replaced. Run the command as the user who installed agentx, or install again with the install script.
A download that does not match its checksum, or that does not run, leaves your agentx as it was. Run the command again.

Exit codes

With --json, the command emits one update event, with state (current, available or updated), channel (stable or nightly), current_version, version and path. See JSON output.
