agentx runs on macOS and Linux, on Intel and ARM. It also needs git 2.40 or later on your PATH.

Install

Install with Homebrew:
Homebrew builds agentx from source, so the first install takes about a minute. Or install the latest release with the install script:
The script downloads the release for your system from GitHub, checks it against the release’s checksums and installs it to ~/.local/bin. It never asks for sudo. If ~/.local/bin is not on your PATH, the script says how to add it. To read the script before you run it, download it first:
The script takes these options, after sh -s -- when you pipe it: Then run agentx doctor to check that this machine is ready.

Update

Update the way you installed:
  • Homebrew: run brew upgrade agentx.
  • Install script: run the install command again, with the options you used the first time. It replaces the binary in place. A running agentx serve keeps the old version until it restarts.
Run agentx version to see which version you have.

Try a nightly build

Every night, agentx builds the latest code as a nightly, such as 0.3.0-nightly.20261001, when it has changed. Nightlies get fixes and features first, and they have not had the testing a release has. Install the newest nightly:
Run the same command to move to a newer nightly. To go back to the latest release, run the install command without --nightly. With Homebrew, brew install --HEAD grundmanise/tap/agentx builds the latest code instead of the latest release.

Build from source

Build with Go 1.27 or later:
On macOS, keep cgo enabled, the default, so agentx serve watches through FSEvents.

Uninstall

  • Homebrew: run brew uninstall agentx.
  • Install script: delete ~/.local/bin/agentx, or the file in the directory you installed to.
Uninstalling leaves agentx home, ~/.agentx, and your skills in place.
